REAL School Gardens, Surgical Care Affiliates, The United Way and Richardson Bike Mart were part of an amazing occasion held on Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at the Gaylord Texan Resort for the children of the organization, Bea’s Kids. This event was created to increase interest in the subjects of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, also known as STEM. This event not only reached out to the areas of STEM, but it also gave the kids confidence and a feeling of accomplishment after creating each project. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'" On Monday, January 21, 2013, our nation celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service in honor of Dr. King Jr.’s legacy. Each year, Americans across the country answer that question by coming together on the MLK Holiday to serve their neighbors and communities. [http://mlkday.gov/] Going beyond providing community service on just one day out of the year, Dr. King Jr. calls us to continue to serve our neighbors and communities throughout the year. A recent assessment of student performance over the first six years of our program (2003-2009) showed that schools with a REAL School Garden had average passing rates on the Science TAKS test that were more than 5% higher than those without a learning garden. The assessment was conducted by Professor Dale Boisso at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. Before a school gets to benefit from their learning garden a lot has to happen! For example, at William Cabell Elementary in Dallas, with generous donations from United Way and Bank of America, we are preparing their large courtyard for their ...

Just before I started my internship with REAL School Gardens, the RSG
team was out and about capturing video footage for an upcoming contest. The picture below is from Glen Park Elementary, where footage was shot for a video submission to the Sprint Foundation. Glen Park Elementary student drawing her learning garden with her broccoli stuffed animal I knew that I would be working on a wide variety of projects, so I got really excited when I found out that the first item on my internship agenda would not only be editing video clips filmed at an RSG partner school, but ...

Texas’ long, hot summer is almost over, and with it so is the waiting process for the children and teachers at Dallas ISD’s William L. Cabell Elementary School. The Cabell Elementary community received the good news in May that they had been accepted into partnership with REAL School Gardens and would likely receive their own learning garden the following school year. Then, the wait began, as the RSG team worked hard to find the right partners to help bring the learning garden to life. Thanks to the generosity of Bank of America and United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, Cabell’s ...

Volunteers are found at the core of every successful nonprofit organization, and REAL School Gardens is no exception to that. Without the dedicated service offered by our community volunteers, we would be much further away from accomplishing our mission of creating learning gardens that grow successful students. REAL School Gardens would like to send out a well-deserved, special “Thank You” to each individual who has generously donated their time and service to help install and sustain beautiful, dynamic school gardens, provide garden support for North Texas elementary schools and administrative and special event support to REAL School Gardens. Our ...

Both of these events celebrated the successes experienced in REAL school gardens during the 2011-2012 school year. Educators as well as other community members including volunteers, partners and contributors were recognized with certificates of appreciation for their dedication to helping REAL School Gardens fulfill its mission of creating learning gardens that grow successful students. Mother's Day is less than two weeks away - it's on Sunday, May 13th! We
thought we would share some fun and creative ways to show love and
gratitude this Mother's Day. Here are four ideas provided by REAL School Gardens or our supporters: 1) Local, Organic Honey from Cold Springs Farm Beverly Thomas, a talented farmer and generous supporter, owns and runs Cold Springs Farm, a certified organic farm that specializes in heirloom and rare varieties, as well as free range chickens and turkeys. She produces delectable honey gift baskets perfect for mom that include an 8 oz. jar of ...

If you haven’t already heard it through the grapevine, a new “For Lease” sign at Old Firestation #5 has prompted us to make the news more official. In a few months, we are moving from one unique space which we have grown to love to another! This summer REAL School Gardens will re-locate to 1700 University Drive in Fort Worth, where we are looking forward to new offices and teacher training facilities provided to us by our friends at Botanical Research Institute of Texas. We are excited that we will have space in the same building as the ...
