Happy Leap Day: Let’s Leap into a Season of Volunteerism

The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, the worms are emerging from the earth and flowers are beginning to bloom…the signs of spring are among us.  With the spring season rapidly approaching, the need to provide maintenance to gardens becomes even more essential.

Garden Maintenance volunteers provide support to school gardens of REAL School Gardens’ partner schools throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth area.  Some of the typical tasks include assisting with the planting, caring for and gleaning of fruits, vegetables and other edible plants; grooming, edging, watering, composting, digging, hoeing, weeding, thinning, planting, pruning, shoveling, etc.  If you enjoy working outdoors in nature and getting your hands dirty while soaking in the beautiful surroundings, then this is the opportunity for you!  Let the extra calendar day on “Leap Day” (February 29, 2012) be your chance to leap into a season of volunteering your time, talent and effort to help maintain our partner schools’ learning gardens.

To volunteer at one of our REAL School Gardens partner schools,

  • Visit our listing of school partners.
  • Select 1(or more) school(s) to volunteer your time.
  • Email klemon@realschoolgardens.org to let the REAL School Gardens’ Volunteer Coordinator, Kendra Lemon, know which school(s) you’re interested in volunteering.  She will connect you with the school’s Garden Coordinator to get you involved with volunteering in the school’s learning garden.
  • You may also email klemon@realschoolgardens.org to share photos and volunteer stories with REAL School Gardens that can help motivate others to serve as well.  Photos will be shared in our Flickr account as well as on our Facebook page.
