The first public school in Washington, DC to offer Chinese language immersion,Yu Ying combines language immersion with the inquiry-based curricula of the International Baccalaureate Organization.
Yu Ying is fortunate to occupy 3 wooded acres, and currently hosts a butterfly garden, a storm-water run-off pond, an observation deck and climbing fort. The school is located in Ward 5, and is one of the highest points in the city.
Yu Ying is home to 511 racially diverse children from Pre-K – 6th grades as well as 53 full-time teachers and 33 part-time staff members.
Outdoor classrooms are ideal locations to teach both Science and Language Arts. Yu Ying participates in the International Baccalaureate Program, and spends much of the instructional day focused on STEM. The hands-on project-based learning a REAL school garden promotes strengthens this academic structure. As a Chinese immersion school, Yu Ying already provides minority students with a valuable language for future career success, and enhancing the existing STEM curriculum will further enhance their job prospects. The garden will be located right in front of the school and showcased to the many visiting dignitaries and officials Yu Ying hosts.
