What We Do
REAL School Gardens partners with school districts to give teachers the high-quality professional development and the immersive instructional environment they need to lead effective experiential outdoor lessons in key subjects.
Through a 2+ year professional learning program, we provide instructional coaching proven to help teachers use gardens to engage students in experiential lessons to effectively deepen understanding and accelerate learning. REAL School Gardens’ Instructional Coaches visit schools regularly to hold group and individual professional learning sessions that make it easy for any teacher to lead effective experiential lessons outdoors. Outdoor Classroom Design & Build
For low-income schools without a usable learning garden, REAL School Gardens partners with corporations that care to help fund the construction of a full outdoor classroom. During a fun one-day garden-building event called the “Big Dig,” corporate partners send employee volunteers to help parents, teachers, and students turn their unused outdoor space into a helpful outdoor classroom that’s full of instructional features.
For schools with an existing learning garden, we work with teachers, parents, and local sponsors to add the key outdoor classroom features that make the space more useful before we begin our professional learning program.
REAL School Gardens’ seasoned Instructional Coaches carefully design standards-based Math, Science, and Language Arts lessons to fit teachers’ curricula and help them achieve their academic goals. We also offer alumni schools ongoing professional coaching and gardening expertise to keep their learning garden program growing strong for years to come.
